Summertime is just around the corner and all we want to do is lay by the pool and splash around in salty oceans…but, with our extensions in of course.
So, what does that extra UV time and chlorine-filled water mean for your extensions?…
The good news is, YES, you can still hang on your beach vacation and swim in the water…BUT, you’ll need to give some extra love and attention to your hair to maintain the integrity of your extensions.
Here are our top 5 simple tips to help your long locks thrive through all your summer activities, PLUS, a discount code from <a href=”Virtue Labs“>Virtue Labs for our favorite Summer must-haves!
1. RINSE YOUR HAIR BEFORE SWIMMING IN POOLS/OCEAN
We do not encourage swimming with your extensions. It causes extra dryness, damage, and even discoloration to your hair, RINSE BEFORE YOU SWIM! Take the time to prep your hair before taking a swim by rinsing your hair with water to reduce the absorption of chlorine and salt. Dry hair acts like a sponge, so taking a dip without the extra moisture will cause to you absorb an excess of the bad stuff that can damage your hair and extensions. Avoid soaking your hair too much when swimming, as it can loosen the integrity of the bonds.
Immediately after swimming, rinse through your hair with water to limit further damage and wash with VIRTUE Purifying Shampoo to remove all impurities and add back in that dose of moisture.
Rough dry the hair at the bonds and allow the rest of the length of the hair to air-dry.

One of the biggest ways to avoid damage to your extensions and hair is to keep it properly brushes and free of tangles. When swimming and cruising around with the wind in your hair, make sure to braid your hair or keep it in a low bun to avoid a mess of tangles that will pull at the bonds when brushed and reduce the life the extensions.
Also, be sure to use a proper brush for extensions and brushing over the application site. Your hair is at its’ weakest point when it’s wet, so using a brush that is meant for extensions is key to maintaining the strength of your hair and your extensions.
Just as overexposure to the sun is damaging to our skin, the same can be said for our hair. Sun damage to your hair presents itself as dry and brittle, broken or split ends, frizziness, and discoloration. The sun’s UV rays act similar to bleach on the hair. Bleach mixes with the melanin in hair and strips the color, damages the hair’s cuticle and coveted keratin protein.
Opt for a cute hat to keep your hair and extensions protected for excessive sun exposure.

Just as we use a face mask once a week, we should be using a hair mask once a week!…especially in the summer time. During Summer months when your hair is generally taking on much more heat damage, experiencing dryness from summer swimming, and switching between different types of weather when traveling, it’s important to give that extra spa-time to your hair by applying an at-home deep conditioning treatment. Staying dedicated to using a restorative treatment weekly or bi-weekly will add in that extra moisture that you’re lacking and prevent further breakage, while leaving you with lush, shiny locks.
